What We Discuss In This Episode:
Bryce talks a little bit about the obesity crisis. Certainly the last couple years have been very challenging for humanity – with COVID 19 – which is certainly a serious thing. Studies have shown upwards of 80% of the people that were impacted with COVID from a severe perspective, whether hospitalized or even had incurred a fatality, were statistically obese. But way more than that, it actually just makes every single organ in your body work harder.
Bryce also discusses how our aging process can affect us. Whether you’re a 20-year-old, 30-year-old or older female, when you experience hormonal changes, especially during midlife, there are a lot of things changing. So, if we’re looking at it from a fat loss perspective and really want to eliminate body fat, whether the midsection or any other area, nutrition is actually going to be the best bet in terms of getting you lean and burning body fat.
We discuss the differences vegetarianism can made to your routine, and how this can be a challenge. But protein is the building block of lean muscle. And sometimes women are concerned about becoming big and bulky, so tend not to want to lift heavy weights. The reality of this situation is most guys have a hard time putting on lean muscle mass, unless they’re really focused on resistant training just from the amount of testosterone in their body. So really at the end of the day, you need to focus on making sure that you have good protein source to make sure that your body can replenish your lean muscle, which if you put on lean muscle, what happens that will make you make you look toned, you’ll burn more fat at a steady state, you’ll look toned, which is obviously very important.
Bryce answers a much-asked question – When you work out a lot what should you eat? Should you eat before you go work out? Is something specific that you should eat after you work out, um, because obviously burning the calories. And does your body processes things differently to somebody that’s sedentary. Bryce shares that everyone’s body’s a little bit different. Also, everyone typically works out a different timeframe. Bruce typically likes to work out very earlier in the morning like a lot of female clients. His recommendation and his personal choice is to drink, at least 12 ounces of water, maybe even eat half of a banana, which is a carbohydrate source. However, if you eat too much, you can kind of feel bogged down or maybe bloated. So, there is that kind of balance. You just want to also make sure that you’re not working out on an empty stomach because of blood sugar balance, because you could also get very lightheaded in your workout. So, hydration is really important. And then depending on your workout is it’s always important to have a little bit of substance – Bruce feels his half banana that works for him! It’s just enough substance to give him the energy he needs, but it also doesn’t make him feel over full, bogged down or depleted of energy as he’s going through the exercise.
After you’ve exercised. that’s actually where your body is primed to basically take on calories. So, you definitely should have a source of protein, whether it’s a protein shake or a lean piece of protein within 45 minutes of your exercise. And really what that does is your body’s breaking down muscle fibers, and the protein in your body is actually restoring those muscle fibers. You’re able to build them back quicker, leaner and denser, which actually creates more toning in your body and burns more calories also too, typically speaking, especially if you’ve gone through a really intense training session and your body’s going to be depleted of energy. The flip side of that is if you have a lot of sugar, as an example, those are simple carbohydrates and your body stores them to fat right away. So, you just want to stay away from sugar and simple carbohydrates as, as much as possible, but that said, you do need to refuel your body within 45 minutes of working out. And it’s important to have a protein source, as well as a carbohydrate source to replenish your, your, your body.
Bryce shares some interesting science and studies showing that you know, are the human body is very dynamic. He talks about how they design programs for the mature woman as opposed to a young woman. Bryce has had clients in their late fifties, 60s start programs and while it may take a little longer to “ramp up” the body, it’s never too late to start – and you can definitely make really strong progress and really, you know, have a better quality of life.
Of course, the earlier you can start the better it is, the longer you wait, the harder it is. So that’s just more incentive to really start now. Even if you’re listening in and you’re thinking I haven’t exercised in a long time – I get that. I’m not going to sugar coat it. It could be tough at first. But after a few short weeks – and better still, after a couple months of you setting a mark for three times a week, that’s going to have incredible long-term benefits for you and your health. So, get started – or keep pushing further. The benefits are so worth it.
