Show Notes:

If you’ve been wondering why stress feels heavier, emotions feel bigger, and calm feels harder to find in midlife, this conversation may bring both clarity and comfort.

If you’ve been feeling more anxious, reactive, overwhelmed, or emotionally stretched than you used to be, you are not alone. For many women, stress feels noticeably harder in midlife — especially during perimenopause and menopause — and there are real reasons why.

In this episode of Living Life Naturally, Lynne is joined by Owen Marcus, Founder and CEO of MELD, for an insightful conversation about the window of tolerance, perimenopause anxiety, and the ways hormonal changes can affect the nervous system, emotional resilience, and the stress response in menopause.

Owen explains that the window of tolerance is the range in which your body and brain can stay regulated enough to think clearly, respond calmly, and remain connected to yourself and others. But when chronic stress builds over time — and hormonal shifts place even more demand on the nervous system — that window can begin to narrow. When that happens, women may feel more easily overwhelmed, more emotionally reactive, more anxious, or even shut down and disconnected.

Lynne and Owen also explore why common stress-management advice often stops working in midlife. When the body is already operating from a survival response, it is not always enough to simply “think positive,” take a deep breath, or push through. This episode helps explain why that happens and why a more supportive, body-based approach may be needed.

Together, they discuss patterns such as hyperarousal and freeze, the effects of chronic stress on women’s emotional wellbeing, and how body awareness, somatic support, and co-regulation can help create a gentle nervous system reset. The conversation blends science with compassion, offering a deeper understanding of why midlife can feel so intense — and practical ways to support yourself with more awareness and ease.

If stress has been feeling heavier than usual lately, this episode offers both reassurance and insight. It’s a meaningful conversation for women who want to better understand what is happening in their bodies and learn how to support themselves more gently through midlife.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • what the window of tolerance is and why it matters
  • why women may feel more stressed during perimenopause and menopause
  • how hormonal shifts can affect the nervous system
  • the connection between perimenopause anxiety and chronic stress
  • why common stress-management tools do not always work
  • the difference between hyperarousal and freeze
  • how emotional and physical disconnection can show up in midlife
  • what a gentle nervous system reset can look like
  • how body awareness and co-regulation support emotional resilience
