For those of us who suffer with Migraine, we don’t need to be told that it is a “headache” with varying intensities of pain, or that some become sensitive to light, sound and smell. We are also well aware of the fact that nausea can be a common occurrence with Migraine.
Although Migraine may not be completely curable, there are some ways for us to find quite a good degree of relief and prevention. There are many natural remedies that I outline in my book, “The Ultimate Migraine Handbook: An Holistic Approach to Pain Relief,” many of which I have used very effectively in my own life. Below I will share three simple tips to ease and prevent migraines.
By following some simple healthy habits and some natural remedies, we can prevent migraine and find pain relief.
There are definitely some positive changes we can make to our lifestyle which can prove beneficial and prevent the triggering of a migraine. As you well know, migraines can be affected by our daily routines so here are a few simple steps we can take that can certainly help:
Watch What You Drink
Coffee: Drinking beverages like coffee also helps – but in small quantities. Try half a cup of strong coffee – that generally has helped me, so give it a try and see if it helps you too.
Smell: If your sense of smell has kicked up a notch during this attack, and possibly makes you throw-up, this actually can be beneficial as throwing up actually can help relieve the pain. I know it doesn’t sound that great as most of us do not like to throw up, but I know from past experience that when I have, I do feel better afterwards.
Switch off the Lights: Find a peaceful room and turn off the lights. Make the room as dark as possible to block all light from entering the area. This will hopefully make you fall asleep and that is what you need. As I’ve mentioned before, lack of sleep also triggers this debilitating pain.
Try Hot and Cold Therapy: Hot and cold compresses on the tenderest area where you feel a throbbing pain often helps in relaxing the muscles. Some people have also benefited by hot and cold showers.
Tip: You can also ask someone to massage your back neck, putting pressure on certain points which give you relief.
What Shall I Eat?
Chocolate: Although a migraine trigger for some, for others who experience frequent migraines, try carrying a plain dairy milk chocolate bar in your bag. For quite a few people, eating a little chocolate when the pain starts can actually help relieve the pain. .
Pomegranates: Often, we do not want to eat the tiniest big with a migraine, but I recently learned that if you don’t feel like eating anything, pomegranate is a great option. Pomegranates don’t smell, so if smells are bothering you, you don’t have to worry about that. Pomegranates have great medicinal properties as well. Keeping the stomach full for some hours is an added benefit of a pomegranate.
Vanilla and chocolate ice-cream: For some, ice-cream seems to help. I know I have often tried a vanilla milkshake and it has definitely helped ease the pain and nausea and amazing as it may sound, has helped the migraine go away. The sugar content in the ice-cream balances the sugar level in the body. When your sugar levels are out of balance, this may result in weakness which can also trigger a migraine.
Being Outdoors
Always wear sunglasses when you are outside during the day. The sun’s glare wreaks havoc on a migraine sufferer. Keep your head covered too. This will add extra protection from direct heat.

• keep an organized and routine lifestyle
• eat regularly
• get enough sleep
• protect yourself from the sun and heat
• watch what you eat
• use heat/cold therapy
