Ah – relaxation — good for the soul, good for the body, good for relieving headaches, good for stress relief, good for decompressing from a stressful day/week or time in your life!
Here are some quick tips!
Breathing. To do this, stop what you’re doing and focus on breathing. Sit up straight and place a hand on your stomach. Breathe in through the nose and exhale slowly through the mouth. (Long, deep breaths.) Do this a few times, and you will begin to calm down and fell less stressed.
Mediation. This is where you focus inwardly in a way that reduces anxiety and stress. Start with deep breathing and recite a “mantra” (Merriam-Webster describes a mantra as sound, word, or phrase that is repeated by someone who is praying or meditating). Your mantra may be a Bible verse or something as simple as “I am feeling peaceful and calm.” Try to block out distractions and passing thoughts, and keep reciting your mantra. You can do this at home and work — it increases productivity as well as fighting off stress. This is a great way not only to de-stress but also to help you with migraines and chronic headaches.
Music. If we listen to relaxing sounds or music/singing, it can bring about relaxation, calm, and encouragement – definitely lessening the stress we are carrying. The type of music/sounds depend on the person. Try to focus on the sounds/music and you find it transforming.
Connect with Other. Reach out to someone you care about. Talking to them, sharing and a laughing changes your mood and alleviates whe stress weighing you down.
Laughter. I know this is not new to you – but laughter is such a good form of therapy! Not only can it make you feel better, but it also has effects on the body that are very beneficial. It lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) while releasing endorphins (which act as pain relievers as well as mood enhancers). It can also help you connect and bond with each other. So, the challenge for is to find a way to include plenty of laughter in your day. Remember, it’s good for the soul, as well as for those around you!
So, in doing some of these things, you will find yourself relieving the stress and decompressing. Actually, you can do some other simple things as well to help decompress. Throw on your favorite most comfortable outfit and just hang out around the house; put a heat wrap around your neck and shoulders for 10-15 minutes (one of my personal favorites), go and get a massage, or go outside for 10-15 minutes and “commune with nature” if your location allows.
However, you choose to relax and decompress, one thing is for sure, we all need to take care of ourselves in these ways to keep ourselves healthy, focused and energetic.
