There’s something about April that has always felt special to me.
Maybe it goes back to growing up in England, where walking was simply part of everyday life. We walked everywhere. We walked to school, to the shops, to visit friends, and often just because that was how you got from one place to another. At the time, I didn’t think much about it. It was just normal. But looking back now, I can see what a gift that was.
Especially in spring.
I still remember those early signs of the season beginning to appear after a long, grey winter. The ground would start to soften, the air would feel a little less sharp, and there they were — those brave little flowers peeking up through the earth. Daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops. Such simple things, and yet they always felt so hopeful to me. There was something about seeing those first signs of life returning that gave you a lift, almost as if nature was whispering, It’s time to begin again.
I think that’s one of the reasons I love April so much to this day.
There’s a tenderness to it. A softness. It doesn’t come charging in demanding a complete reinvention. It simply invites us to step outside, breathe a little deeper, and notice that life is stirring again — both around us and, perhaps, within us too.
And that’s exactly why I love our April Walking Challenge so much.
A Gentle Fresh Start
Every year when this month comes around, I find myself craving the basics in the very best way. Fresh air. A little more light. A reason to step outside. A habit that feels supportive rather than demanding. By the time April arrives, I think many of us are ready to shake off some of the heaviness of winter, not with pressure or perfection, but with something that helps us feel a little more alive again.
For me, walking has always been one of the easiest and kindest ways to do that.
Maybe it’s because walking feels so natural. It doesn’t ask us to be anything other than who we are in that moment. We don’t have to be especially fit, especially motivated, or especially organized. We just have to put on our shoes and begin. One foot in front of the other. One step, then another.
Sometimes that’s all we need.
And perhaps in midlife, that matters more than ever.
Why Walking Works So Beautifully in Midlife

By this stage of life, many of us have discovered that extreme approaches rarely serve us well. We’ve tried the strict plans, the all-or-nothing thinking, the pressure to get everything exactly right. And often those things leave us feeling more depleted than supported. Midlife asks something different of us. It asks us to listen more closely. It asks us to care for ourselves in ways that are sustainable, nurturing, and rooted in real life.
Walking fits beautifully into that kind of care.
It’s simple, yes. But simple doesn’t mean insignificant. In fact, I think walking is one of the most underestimated things we can do for ourselves, especially in midlife. It doesn’t require a gym membership, fancy equipment, or a complicated schedule. It doesn’t ask us to punish our bodies or prove anything. It simply asks us to begin where we are and let the habit build from there.
And honestly, there’s something beautiful about that.
Because by midlife, many of us are no longer interested in chasing habits that make us feel worse. We want things that work in real life. We want practices that help us feel better, not more worn out. We want movement that supports our bodies with kindness.
Walking does exactly that.
A good walk can boost your energy when you’re feeling sluggish. It can lift your mood when life feels heavy. It can help your circulation, support your heart, strengthen your bones, improve mobility, and encourage better sleep. It can ease stress and settle that tense, buzzy feeling so many women carry without even realizing how much it is affecting them.
More Than Exercise

And then there’s the mental and emotional side of it, which I think matters just as much.
- Sometimes a walk is where the fog starts to clear.
- Sometimes it’s where your breathing deepens.
- Sometimes it’s where your shoulders finally relax.
- Sometimes it’s where your thoughts begin to untangle a little.
And sometimes it’s where you stop staring at a screen, stop doing for everyone else, and remember that you are a person who needs care too. Not just productivity. Not just responsibility. Care.
I think that is one of the loveliest gifts of walking.
It gives us space.
Space to think. Space to pray. Space to notice the season changing. Space to feel the sun on our face or the breeze on our skin. Space to remember that health does not always have to be complicated to be meaningful.
Some of my best little resets have started with nothing more than putting on my trainers and stepping outside. No grand plan. No perfect routine. Just a willingness to move my body and let the day soften around the edges. And while a walk may not solve everything, it can shift something. It can soften the heaviness. It can help you return home to yourself a little.
That is no small thing.
Why Spring Makes It Even More Special
I also think there’s something especially fitting about walking in spring.
Spring has a way of gently waking us up again. After winter, when many of us naturally spend more time indoors and perhaps feel a little slower, April offers us a different kind of energy. Not frantic. Not forceful. But quietly hopeful. The trees begin to change. The flowers start peeking up through the ground. The air feels different. There’s a sense that the world is beginning again, and somehow that makes it feel possible for us to begin again too.
That feeling still takes me back.
Even now, when I see spring flowers or notice the season starting to shift, I feel a little of that same quiet joy I felt as a girl in England. There is something grounding about walking and seeing the world change around you in real time. You notice things when you walk that you might miss in the rush of daily life. The color of a blossom. The smell of damp earth after rain. The sound of birds in the morning. The warmth of the sun on a cool day. Those little details have a way of bringing us back to ourselves.
And I think many of us need that.
One Step at a Time Still Counts

We spend so much of life rushing, multitasking, worrying, tending to other people, and trying to keep all the plates spinning. Walking asks something simpler of us. It asks us to slow down just enough to notice. To breathe. To move. To be present.
And maybe that’s why this challenge has become such a favorite in my group year after year.
It’s not really about being the fastest or walking the farthest. It is not about comparison or competition. It’s about creating momentum in a gentle, encouraging way. It’s about women cheering one another on. It’s about showing up for ourselves with consistency rather than intensity.
That matters.
Especially if you’re coming into April feeling a little off. A little tired. A little disconnected from your routines. Maybe winter threw you off more than you expected. Maybe life has been full. Maybe your energy hasn’t quite been where you want it to be. Maybe you’ve been telling yourself you need to “get back on track,” but even that phrase feels exhausting.
That’s exactly why walking is such a lovely place to begin.
- You don’t need to overhaul your whole life this month.
- You don’t need the perfect plan.
- You don’t need to be in top shape before you start.
- You don’t need fancy leggings, the right watch, or a color-coded schedule.
You simply need to begin where you are.
- Maybe that looks like ten minutes around the block.
- Maybe it’s a stroll after lunch instead of scrolling on your phone.
- Maybe it’s an early morning walk before the house gets busy.
- Maybe it’s an evening walk with your husband.
- Maybe it’s phoning a friend while you move.
- Maybe it’s parking a little farther away.
- Maybe it’s taking the long way around.
- Maybe it’s walking slowly and thoughtfully, letting yourself breathe and just be.
It all counts.
The Quiet Confidence Walking Can Build

I wish more women truly believed that.
Because sometimes we dismiss the small things, when in reality the small things are often the very things that change how we feel. A little more movement. A little more daylight. A little less sitting. A little more breathing room. A little more time spent caring for ourselves in ways that feel manageable and kind.
Those things add up.
A walk here, a walk there, and suddenly you feel a bit clearer. A bit lighter. A bit more energized. Not because you did something dramatic, but because you supported your body in a steady way. You kept a quiet promise to yourself. And that matters more than we sometimes realize.
I think there’s also a lovely emotional benefit to walking that does not get talked about enough.
Walking can help us feel capable again.
When life feels cluttered, when our bodies feel unfamiliar, when our energy is up and down, and when motivation is not exactly overflowing, a simple walk can remind us that we’re not stuck. It reminds us that we can still take a step. We can still choose something supportive. We can still care for ourselves in small, meaningful ways.
That builds confidence.
Not the loud kind. Not the showy kind. But the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you’re keeping company with yourself. You’re showing up. You’re doing something kind for your body. You’re moving forward, even if only gently.
And that, to me, is such a beautiful picture of wellness.
Not punishing. Not performative. Not exhausting. Just supportive, realistic, and rooted in care for the whole woman.
Let April Be Gentle

I think that’s especially important in a world that often tells women that wellness has to be harder, faster, stricter, or more impressive to count. But I have never believed that. Some of the most powerful habits are the ones that fit naturally into your life. The ones you can return to again and again. The ones that help you feel more grounded rather than more stressed.
Walking is one of those habits.
And the beauty of it is that it can be whatever you need it to be on a given day.
- Some days it’s energizing.
- Some days it’s calming.
- Some days it’s social.
- Some days it’s solitary.
- Some days it’s prayerful.
- Some days it’s practical.
- Some days it’s simply the best thing you can manage, and that’s enough.
In fact, perhaps that’s one of the reasons walking works so well in midlife. It’s adaptable. It meets us where we’re. It doesn’t demand that every day look the same. And that’s a gift when life is full, bodies are changing, and energy can be a bit unpredictable.
So as we head into April, I want to encourage you not to underestimate the power of a daily walk. It may seem simple, but simple can be powerful. Simple can shift your mood. Simple can support your energy. Simple can help you feel more grounded, more present, and more like yourself again.
That’s no small thing.
So if you’re craving a gentle fresh start this month, perhaps this is it.
- Not a drastic overhaul.
- Not a punishing program.
- Not one more thing to feel guilty about.
Just a pair of shoes, a little fresh air, and a decision to take one caring step at a time.
Let April be the month you move with more intention.
Let it be the month you breathe a little deeper.
Let it be the month you notice what is blooming around you.
Let it be the month you give your body some loving support.
Let it be the month you boost your energy and feel better, not by pushing harder, but by walking gently forward.
