Don’t you just LOVE that fresh, sparkly feeling you begin a New Year with?

For me, it’s the VERY BEST PART about celebrating New Year’s.

You make plans for yourself. You promise you’ll do this better, do that differently, and finally follow through all the way to the ACHIEVEMENT of that big lofty goal.

It’s going to be different THIS year for sure.

Then, life gets in the way. Things get derailed and don’t go as planned.

You get discouraged. Feel like a total and complete failure. The wind gets blown right out of your sails and what happens next?

You give up.

Guess what? It doesn’t have to be that way THIS year!

Follow the helpful tips and add them to your daily routine and you’ll end this year feeling accomplished, motivated and like a winner – because that’s exactly what you are!

Create Goals in a Way that Sets You Up to Win.

Step number one in reaching your goals is to make them attainable.  

There are likely many things you want to accomplish and choosing the right ones will put you on the path to success.
Create a list of things you truly want to accomplish.

  • How many goals can you set out to accomplish comfortably, without over-extending yourself?
  • What do you want most out of the year ahead?

Put Your Goals on Paper

Write your list of what you want to accomplish this year and place it somewhere visible, such as on your bathroom mirror or your refrigerator door. You want to be able to see your list so it’ll help you stay focused on what it is you’re aiming for.

What are your top 5 goals for the New Year? List them out on paper and keep them somewhere visible.

Remember…don’t overextend yourself. While there may be 20 things you want to get done this year, start by picking one or two things to work toward at a time. As you accomplish them, cross it off your list of 5 and move onto the next.

Tell Your Loved Ones Your Goals

Accountability is key. Tell your friends and family about your goals. Pick someone to be your accountability partner through the process of achieving your goal. Check in regularly to evaluate how it’s going. What’s working? What needs adjusting?

And be honest. Tell the truth when you check in.


If you haven’t been on track as planned, this is the exact reason why we have an accountability partner. It’s an opportunity to reevaluate and adjust along the way. Devise a new plan of action to reach your goals as you need to.

Trial and error is a normal part of this process. The first plan you make may not work out as you hoped, which then provides an opportunity to find the right path to success.

  • How often will you check in with them to evaluate your progress?
  • Who would be the best collaborator to help you come up with a new plan of action, if needed?

One Step At a Time

Baby Taking Small Steps

When beginning to work toward your goal, start with baby steps. Maybe your goal is to lose 20 pounds. Instead of changing your diet completely overnight, decide to add in one healthy food this week. Next, try eliminating or reducing a sugary food you like. Following that, add more water to your daily intake.

These “baby steps” will help you ease into reaching your goals and will successfully begin new habits.
Change is a process, not a race. Pace yourself for success!

Show Yourself Compassion

If your plan isn’t working out as you hoped, don’t fret. Ask yourself why. Figure out where the faults lie in your course of action. Adjust.

It could be as simple as re-planning your goal to fit your schedule better. Allow yourself some wiggle room to figure out what works best for you.

• How can you stay positive when things don’t go as planned?

The Power of Positive Thinking

It sounds so simple. Thinking positively can mean the difference between success and failure. Keeping a positive mindset even during a setback (and you can bet there will be setbacks as this is some deep work) will help you pick yourself up and find the motivation to continue on in a new way.


Positive affirmations are a great way to begin your day.


Write down some of your favorite affirmations and place them somewhere highly visible. Say them out loud to yourself each morning as you begin to take on your new day.

• Keep a gratitude journal to help you stay in a positive mindset.

Do Yoga

When we’re highly stressed, we’re less likely to attain our goals and intentions.


Yoga and breathing exercises will help curb your stress levels. Try adding these practices into your self-care routines as you’re reaching for your goals.

• Incorporate these into your schedule to significantly reduce your stress levels.

Consider a Health Coach

Having your friends and family hold you accountable is helpful, but having a personal Health Coach to assist you along your journey is priceless.

Health Coaches are trained to assist you in reaching your goals and attain optimal health, overall wellness and balance of mind, body and spirit.
