We hear a lot of talk about water – the benefits of water – how important water is to our bodies, etc. However, with that in mind, I realize many people do not like plain water and find it hard to drink one glass, let alone 6-8 glasses a day. We also know that the new statistics and research show that we should be actually drinking half our body weight in water. Yep! That can add up to quite a lot of water.
So if you don’t like plain water, here are a few ideas. Try making your own “infused water,” so that you can have a little taste added to what is good for you.
I’ll share a few tips for infusing your own water, so you don’t have to be bored or “put off” by the taste of plain water, and you don’t have to purchase store manufactured infused water with all the artificial sugars and other less than healthy ingredients.
If you’re one of the many people who find it boring and difficult to drink plain water, why not try making your own infused water?
It can be done easily with fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices – much more than just that slice of lemon in your water. You can be as creative as you want to be. All you need are some large glass bottles or jars with lids to make this water or some similar type of container. You let the ingredients sit in the refrigerator for a few hours to let the flavor infuse – the longer it sits the better – and then pour yourself a glass and enjoy. Add ice if you like, but keep the unused portion in the refrigerator.
So, when making your infused water, make sure you wash your ingredients well. If possible, and if you can afford it, use organic fruits and vegetables. Avoid fruit if it’s overly ripe or bruised.
Here are some ingredient ideas:
- Spices: Cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, fresh ginger (my favorite), cloves, vanilla bean
- Vegetables: Cucumber, celery, fennel, carrots,
- Herbs: Rosemary, mint, thyme, basil, parsley, cilantro
- Fruit: Berries (fresh or frozen), melon, tropical fruits, apples, pears, citrus
Pro Tip: You’re better off using filtered water but if you don’t have some type of filtration system or a Brita filter you keep in the refrigerator, tap water will work just fine.
There are many varieties of ways to infuse water with all types of combinations, but here are a few ideas:
- Kiwi Blueberry
- Sliced oranges, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, allspice
- Sliced fresh ginger and slices of lime
- Sliced mango and pineapple with a handful of fresh mint
- Sliced apples with a few cinnamon sticks
- Sliced peaches, fresh ginger slices, and sliced strawberries
The combinations are endless. Let me know what combinations you find and how it tastes.
Remember: Dehydration has a bad effect on our bodies, including muscle cramps, dry mouth, weakness, and headaches.
Make it your goal to drink more water today.
